A Registered Dietitian's Personal Collection of Recommendation for Healthy Eating, Great Skin Care and Meal Planning Tips for Busy Families

  • Don’t Forget A Serving of Prunes Per Day

A New Year may trigger some individuals to create New Year’s Resolutions. Others may continue on a lifelong journey of continuing to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle often include a high daily intake of fibre. A daily high fibre intake can lead to better digestion. As it is #skincaresunday, a better digestion can help to lead to healthy skin.

To help jumpstart your increase in daily fibre intake, why not consider 5 prunes (40 grams OR 1 serving) per day? The initial thought of prunes for many individuals does not bring pleasant images. Most individuals consider prunes only as a mean to help him/her become regular. Not only do I personally love the taste of prunes but prunes can offer so much more than aid for bowel movement regularity.

What is in one serving of prunes?

    Calories: 100 kcals

    Fat: 0 grams

    Carbohydrate: 26 grams

    Fibre: 3 grams

    Sugar: 15 grams

    Sodium: 9 mg

    Protein: 1 gram

What you may not realize about prunes is that by eating 5 prunes a day, you can boost Vitamin K and manganese intake. By boosting the intake of Vitamin K and Manganese, rate of bone loss can slow down in postmenopausal women.

Because 5 prunes contain 3 grams of fibre, this snack choice is considered a source o fibre. Prunes promote satiety which means you will be reaching for less snacky type foods in between meals.

Some individuals may argue that prunes are dried fruit; therefore, it contains alot of sugar. For those who have blood sugar issues, you may have heard of glycemic index and glycemic load.

Glycemic index measures how a certain food affects the blood sugar levels using white sugar (i.e. glucose) as the standard. Glycemic load, on the other hand, measures the effect ofΒ  a serving of a specific foodΒ  (e.g. 2 cups of fresh strawberries, 5 prunes) has on blood sugar levels.

I have great news to share as prunes are considered both a low Glycemic Index food and a low Glycemic Load food.

Food For Thought: What Have You Got To Lose? Will you be willing to eat 5 prunes of day for the various benefits listed above?

  • Fresh Start- Why Not Try Beloved Zoodles?

Happy 2019!!! Wishing everyone the very best in 2019. Over the holidays, I am sure we all had many good meals but the truth is, vegetables may not have been top priority. Other dishes were definitely the star. With 365 new days, there’s 365 new changes that can occur. Let’s start by reincorporating vegetables into our diet. I know many individuals who prefer warm foods over the winter given the frigid conditions in Toronto, Canada but this zoodle salad can be served at room temperature.

I know many individuals have tried zucchini noodles or “zoodles” as they are affectionately called but have you tried this combination?

If you don’t have a spiralizer, you should get one because you can spiralize other vegetables as well. It gives you a great arm workout.

    The Easiest Zoodle Salad Ever!!!

    zoodle salad

    Approximate Proportions (for 2 people):

Spiralize 1 zucchini per person (2 zucchinis in total)

Chop up 1/2 box of Axiany Tomatoes (best tomatoes EVER!!!) per person.

Add 1/4 c Unseasoned Rice Wine Vinegar (you can add more if necessary)

    Salt & Pepper to Taste

That’s the recipe! πŸ™‚ How simple is that? Add 1/2 c of chickpeas, a chicken breast or a piece of baked salmon for a complete meal.Β

You might find the concept of eating raw zucchini weird; however, with the zucchini marinated in rice wine vinegar, you won’t even know that it is raw. It truly is one of my favourite go to salads to make not only is it simple to make but it requires so few ingredients and it tastes delicious!!!! It’s a win win situation no matter how you like at it.

Food For Thought: What flavour combinations do you like with spiralized vegetables?

  • Self Reflection- Have You Tried?

It’s that time of year again. As we get ready to ring in the new year, have you started to reflect on how your year went and what’d you like to accomplish in 2019?Β As much as on the surface, life seems to be the “same same”, 2018 is a milestone year for myself.

As I sit down to reflect, it’s been 10 years since I graduated from university. This coming year (2019)Β will mark my tenth year as a practicing Registered Dietitian. Over the past 10 years, there have been so many changes and I can’t wait to see what 2019 will bring.

I’ve been married for 6 of the 10 years since graduation. Marriage has been wonderful. We’re really savouring every moment of each other’s company before others come into the picture. 2019 will bring new challenges as we both get ready to welcome a mini golden doodle at the end of January 2019. We’re ready to test our parenting skills.Β Wish us luck! πŸ˜‰

Over the years, as a Registered Dietitian, I’ve been able to interact with vastly different demographics.Β  Completing my internship at St. Michael’s Hospital opened my eyes to counseling individuals with NKA (no known addresses) and/or individuals in orange jumpsuits. πŸ˜‰Β  Having worked in a diabetes education centre for 2 years allowed me to see firsthand how the diabetes epidemic is real. It’s interesting to see how the diagnosis of diabetes can really motivate some individuals to make lifestyle changes whereas the diagnosis of diabetes can cause depression and denial for others.

Living in a multicultural city like Toronto has allowed me an opportunity to work in a long term care home catered for Chinese Canadians. I personally find elders to be quite cute but this opportunity allows me to be in touch with my own heritage. In today’s aging population, it’s not only important to take care of the elders but also of the caregivers. When another organization who caters to the Chinese Canadians asked me to give talks to caregivers, I happily obliged. Although I am a Canadian Born Chinese (CBC), I am proud to say I am fluent in three languages (Mandarin, Cantonese and English). It’s funny to think that individuals only began to realize I could speak otherΒ languages since becoming part of the workforce.

    careerpath

Being a retail dietitian for almost 8 years has allowed me to gather invaluable consumer insight and stay on top of food product trends. The retail dietitian position has allowed me to truly translate nutrition into practical termsΒ  (i.e. provide simple, healthy and delicious recipes for both meals and snacks). The retail dietitian position has also allowed me to gain a solid product knowledge base; this skill comes in handy for individuals living with food sensitivities and/or allergies. Consumers may say they know how to eat healthy; however, how many individuals are doing “healthy eating” correctly?

Throughout my career as a Registered Dietitian thus far, I have been blessed with many media Β opportunities be it newspaper, magazine, radio and/or TV. I think back to my segments done in the earlier days and I can personally see how much I have grown and developed not only as aΒ Registered Dietitian but also as a person. As scary as live TV and/or radio may be, I enjoy the challenges these types of segments present as these experiences can help further enhance my flexibility, adaptability and ability to think quick on my feet.

Being an individual who is relatively open to suggestions and giving individuals recommendations, this is how Rowena Recommends was born. I’ve been thinking about creating a personal blog for some time now; however, in April 2018, I finally took the leap of faith and started blogging twice per week. I’ve gained a new level of respect for bloggers. Blogger life is not easy! πŸ™‚

Be it in personal and/or professional life, I love mentoring individuals. It is so rewarding to see others succeed at what they want to do. Having said that, I have always been a strong advocate for mentoring nutrition students, interns and newly graduated dietitians. As much as individuals learn from me, the nutrition students, interns and newly graduated dietitians also teach me a lot as well. I truly am grateful for all the nutrition students, interns and newly graduated dietitians I have met and/or mentored. I would beΒ not be the person I am today without you all.

In an earlier post, I hinted at the fact that I was not always comfortable in the kitchen. Since November 2017, I have been diligently attending culinary courses through George Brown College to sharpen my skills. In 2018, I completed Rustic French, Northern Italy, Mexican, Sushi and Knife Skills. I’m registered for BBQ next.

In 2018, my husband and I went to France for vacation. Because I have not spoken French for ~15 years, I decided to take some private tutor classes to brush up on this language. I am by no means fluent; however, I was very proud of myself to be able to make conversation with Parisians while in France. In today’s society, the focus and/or goal is to be a global citizen. Knowing one more language fluently will position you better. Knowing I have aΒ good base in French, it makes me really want to better my French language skill.

Over the past year, my husband and I also have talked about buying a piano. We have not made the purchase yet. For someone who has completed level 10 in piano, I am shocked at myself as I have not touched the piano for at least 20 years. Although my fingers have some muscle memory, I have lost so much of the technical skills. Piano is a skill I’d like to rebuild as I now realize how lucky I was to have become so accomplished at an instrument at an early age.

In 2018, I finally feel like I achieved a good work life balance. I don’t know what 2019 will bring but I look forward to 365 new days. πŸ™‚

Wishing you the very best in 2019!!!!!!

Food For Thought: What are your takeaways from 2018?

  • Be Present- Are You Actively Listening to Others?

In today’s day and age, the philosophy is “if you don’t document it and post it on some form of social media, it did not happen”. When does this philosophy become toxic? In a world where communication has gotten so easy, why are there more and more people who claim to be lonely?Β  We must all remember that social media is not always reflective of real life. Social media is used by individuals to portray a certain angle of his/her life.

In the past, I’ve definitely been guilty of wanting to take pictures of my food; I may have also been guilty of answering phone calls and/or messages during gatherings. As I grow older, I reallyΒ strive to put away the phone and be present during all gatherings so that I am able to hear and see everything that is going on. Yes- this does mean that all events are not documented in my life; however, the best memories live on in your head forever.

Personally, I believe I take on the role of the listener more often than the talker. I’m happy to share details of my life with individuals but I amΒ happier and/or more comfortable listening to others. During counselling sessions and/or during undergraduate studies, active listening is a skill that is taught and learned.

    What is Active Listening?

Active listening is not just hearing what the other person is saying but also seeing the complete message (i.e. incorporating the non-verbal cues). The goal of active listening is to help nurture relationships, build trust, avoid misunderstandings and creating an authentic & genuine connection.

Why is active listening so hard to master? Think about all those times when you’ve tuned out and/or mentally checked out of a conversation. Ask yourselves these questions:

    1. Were you not interested in having a conversation with the other individual?
    2. Was your mind somewhere else during the conversation?
    3. Were there physical distractions during the conversation (i.e. lots of noise, a cute guy/girl walked by, a store display you really wanted to check out, etc.)?
    4. Did certain words in the conversation trigger you to tune out and/or check out?
    5. Did a certain tone of voice cause you to tune out?

Being aware of your own barriers to active listening can help you learn to overcome these barriers. In the end, you will have more effective active listening skills.

If you are practicing active listening, you’ll be able to retain more of what others tell you. Are you pleasantly surprised at what some individuals can remember what you’ve told them in the past? Being able to retain the small details is often a positive outcome of active listening. By remembering the small details from a conversation can show an individual you really do care.

Food For Thought: Now that Christmas is over, you may be thinking of New Year’s Resolutions and/or Goals for 2019. Would you like to develop more nurturing, authentic and genuine relationships? Would you like to avoid misunderstandings? Practice active listening. If you feel like you are not a very good active listener, identify what your barriers are. Learn to become aware of these barriers and how to overcome these challenges. Once you have mastered the skill of active listening, your relationships can really be strengthened in a positive way. Let’s start to have more REAL conversations. πŸ˜‰

  • Do You Use a Humidifier?

Do you often complain of dry, flaky, parched skin? It is very important to moisturize your skin. Buying the right products for your skin is definitely important; drinking enough water throughout the day is also important for skin health. However, a simple solution could also be to buy a humidifier.

The humidifier provides additional moisture which can help skin look more radiant, dewy, glowing and plump. The appearance of fine lines may also be reduced.

If you are an individual who cannot use a hydrating mask on a regular basis (i.e. nightly), you may want to consider a humidifier to help improve your skin health.

If you are all about multitasking, have you considered a diffuser? Not only will the diffuser help humidify the air but the diffuser can provide a lovely scent for your home.

    saje diffuser

We use the Saje Diffuser in the bedroom. My husband likes to put the diffuser on his side whereas I bought a personal humidifier put on my night stand. We also have a regular sized humidifier in our living room.

Food For Thought: Have you bought your personal sized humidifier to put on your nightstand? If you use a diffuser at home regularly, what essential oils do you like to put in there? Is there a specific scent from Saje you like?

  • Are You Ready for The Holidays?

With less than one week to go, Christmas will officially be here. As a family, December is always a special time of year because my sister and I are both December babies. I may be biased but I really do enjoy the holidays and the time leading up to the holidays. Not only does the city light up with beautiful decorations but it’s truly a time of year where you get together with loved ones and spend much needed quality time. Toronto still has a

In the past, I’ve definitely enjoyed the process of drawing up a list of what gifts to buy for whom. There is a certain element of excitement and happiness when you know you’ve bought the perfect gift for someone; however, as the years go by, I realize it’s not the things you buy for someone but it’s the time you spend with someone that matters.

This time of year can be quite stressful for many individuals not only from the dilemma of not knowing what to buy for whom but also from a financial perspective and also from a time management perspective. There just never seems to be enough time to do everything on your “To Do List”.

To help improve and/or maintain your mental health status, here are some suggestions:

    1. If gift giving is causing you unneeded financial stress, would you be able to cut back?
    2. If you have received many holiday party invitations and are overwhelmed, who are the individuals with whom you’d like to spend time with the most? It’s okay to be “choosy”. Your time is precious too!
    3. In the spirit of giving, have you given back? Giving back does not always mean making a monetary donation to your favourite charity but it also could mean donating your time with an organization that is meaningful to you.

Food For Thought:Β In the midst of the hustle & bustle, have you spent enough quality time with loved ones over this period of time?

  • BB Cream- What a Time Saver in Your Daily Routine

I’m very much a firm believer of less is more when it comes to makeup. On a day to day basis, I don’t wear much makeup. As someone who doesn’t need much coverage, I find BB (Beauty and/or blemish balm) to be a nice option. It’s light in texture but can offer some coverage and often results in a brighter looking complexion.

I particularly like Laneige BB Cushion Hydra Radiance SPF 50. This product contains the patented Melacrusher technology. Melacrusher technology uses truffle yeast extract to help even out skin tone and brighten skin. It’s a great all-on-one option as this light weight formula also contains SPF 50. For individuals who are short on time in the morning, BB cream is a really good time saver.

Skin needs to be able to breathe; therefore, I don’t believe it wearing full coverage foundation on a daily basis. I find BB cream does a great job in offering enough coverage but is light and still allows the skin to breathe. It’s wonderful because not only does this BB cream offer your skin additional hydration but it’s also got SPF where it can help protect your skin against harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Food For Thought: Have you given any BB Creams a try? What BB cream is your favourite?

  • Have you Tried Almond Milk from Califia Farms?

I personally don’t like the taste of milk so that’s why I like to drink almond milk as my main source of calcium.Β  There are so many fortified almond milk choices on the market but I really do think that the Almond Milk by Califia Farms taste the best.

    califia.jpg

Did you know? For the average adult female and/or male (aged 19-50 years old), we need 1000 mg of calcium/day. If you are over the age of 50, the average female or male requires 1200 mg of calcium/day.

Every glass of milk and/or milk alternative typically contains 300 mg of calcium.Β  Based on the recommendations, this means the average person either needs to drink 3 to 4 glasses of milk/day to meet the requirement. Many individuals (including myself) don’t have the habit to drink that much milk and/or milk alternatives.

This is another reason why I like almond milk from Califia Farms because every glass of this almond milk will give me 450 mg of calcium. Please keep in mind that your body can only absorb a maximum of 500 mg of calcium at each time.

Many individuals have the perception that by putting some milk in their coffee and/or tea, they are helping their calcium intake. Because of oxalate in coffee and/or tea, calcium will bind to oxalate and not be absorbed by our bodies.

Food For Thought: Do you need to increase your daily milk and/or milk consumption to help meet calcium needs? If you are like me and don’t like the taste of milk but don’t find almond milk appealing, give Califia Farms Almond Milk a try. Your taste buds will be pleasantly surprised. Not only will your taste buds look forward to your daily calcium intake, you also would be getting 50% more calcium in every serving.

  • Is Your Skin For the Winter?

As we prepare for winter, we strengthen our immune system by consuming an antioxidant rich diet. To better survive the harsh conditions of a Canadian weather, let’s prepare our skin as well with lots of antioxidants.

It’s important to remember that great skin is not just what goes on the outside but what goes on the inside as well. An antioxidant rich diet is also important for healthy skin.

I had heard many great things about Drunk Elephant products. I decided to give the C-Firma Day Serum a try.

    drunk elephant 3

After opening the bottle, it is suggested to store the product in the fridge to help maintain the potency of antioxidant levels. Make sure you remember to do this because the product feels so good on your skin. It does not feel greasy on your skin. It absorbs very quickly and helps you to lock in the moisture in your skin.

What I like about the Drunk Elephant brand is that it is considered a clean product. All Drunk Elephant products are free of essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical screens, fragrance/dyes, and SLS (a harsh detergent). As a result, Drunk Elephant products are ideal for all skin types.

In a previous post about skin health, I mentioned that healthy skin naturally is acidic. I mentioned about becoming aware of the pH levels of skin products to help keep your skin happy. Did you know the Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum has a pH of 3.3?

Serum helps to lock in moisture but it cannot replace the job of a moisturizer. After using this serum for a few days, I do feel like my skin is brighter and more radiant. Make sure to remember to apply your regular moisturizer after you put some serum on.

Food For Thought: What have you got to lose? If you want healthy, glowing and supple skin, make sure to give Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum a try during the winter months as an extra layer to lock in the moisture of your skin. You won’t regret it.

I love this time of year as there are so many good skincare gift sets. I can’t wait to try the rest of the drunk elephant products. Have you tried any other Drunk Elephant products? Let me know what you think!

  • What Is Your Drink of Choice Over the Holidays?

The holiday season is in full swing. Over the holidays, we will have many opportunities to be surrounded by good food and good company. Many individuals would like to stay on track with his/her eating habits during this period of time. Individuals tend to be really hard on ourselves Β in terms of their eating habits but individuals often forget alcohol is another major source of calories during the holiday season.

If you choose to drink, let’s remind ourselves of what the drinking guidelines. Men are recommended to have no more than 15 drinks per week OR no more than 3 drinks per day. Women are recommended to have no more than 10 drinks per week OR no more than 2 drinks per day.

What is the definition of “one drink”?

    1. 1 bottle of beer (341 mL) with 5% alcohol level
    2. 1 bottle of cider/cooler (341 mL) with 5% alcohol level
    3. 1 glass (142 mL) of wine with 12% alcohol level
    4. 1 shot (1.5 oz or 43 mL) of hard liquor (i.e. rye, gin, rum, whiskey) with 40% alcohol level

How many calories are in some common “one drink” options?

    1. Beer: 55 kcals (one bottle of light beer) – 240 kcals (one bottle of craft IPA beer)
    2. Mimosa (4 oz): 87 kcals
    3. Champagne (4 oz.): 90 kcals
    4. White Wine (5 oz.): 120 kcals
    5. Red Wine (5 oz.): 150 kcals
    6. Gin & Tonic (8 oz.): 161 kcals
    7. Martini (3.5 oz.): 215 kcals

Food For Thought: Does it surprise you to find champagne is one of the lowest calorie alcoholic beverage options? If you choose to drink, make champagne a drink of choice more often. πŸ˜‰
